Grand Place in Brussels

Grand Place in Brussels

The Grand Place is the central square of Brussels. The square is the most important landmark in the city. In 1998 it was inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage Site list. It has been an important market center since the 10th century. Every two years in August an enormous flower carpet composed of begonias is set up in patterns for some days. Thanks to Sylvain.

Gaasbeek Castle, Belgium

Gaasbeek Castle, Belgium

Gaasbeek Castle is a national museum in the municipality of Lennik. The fortified castle was erected around 1240 to defend the Duchy of Brabant against the County of Flanders. Later on it was destroyed by Brussels city troops. Starting the 16th century a brick castle was constructed on the ruins of the medieval fortress. In the late 1880’s several renovations were made to recover its medieval-like appearance. The castle contains art collections and is owned by the Flemish Community. Thanks to Gerda.
